Gemma is Director of Sustainability & Communications for Southern Co-op an independent regional business owned by its 160,000 plus members and established in Portsmouth (England) over 140 years ago. Southern Co-op runs 250 community food stores and funeral homes across eleven counties in southern England, as well as crematoria and a natural burial ground in Sussex. Gemma has more than 15 years experience championing corporate responsibility and sustainability within business, predominantly in the retail sector. She has held similar sustainability roles within organisations, including the John Lewis Partnership, KPMG and The Body Shop. Gemma is responsible for developing and leading Southern Co-op’s sustainability plan – ‘Making a Difference’. She is also responsible for Communications (including internal communications, Press & PR and events), Marketing and Digital functions. Gemma is a former member of the West Sussex Environment & Climate Change Board and a current member of the South Downs Partnership, a group with an important stake in the future of the South Downs National Park. Gemma is passionate about the natural world and a keen gardener and photographer.
