Description:

This course is for people over the age of 16 of any ability who are interested in learning how to print with authentic Indian wooden blocks onto a plain calico apron and tea towel. There will be a palette of eco inks for you to try out, along with a selection of hand carved Indian blocks in an array of motifs and patterns to combine to create your own unique patterns. This course would be a great opportunity to make a Christmas gift for a loved one.

The day will cover

• Learning the basics of using a wooden block with the eco ink
• Designing a simple repeat pattern
• Printing a final apron and tea towel

What you will learn

• How to develop your own simple design using Indian wooden blocks
• How to use colour in your pattern.
• How to block print your design onto fabric and paper.

What to bring

• Packed lunch (Tea, Coffee and cake will be provided.)
• Your own apron and please wear clothing you don’t mind getting ink on as it will not wash out.
• Pencil and note pad
• If you wish you can bring examples of simple patterns that you like but this is not essential.

Info on Tutors

Local designer Maud Boothby works in the textile industry and prints her own fabric using wooden blocks that she has designed and carved. After studying Textiles at Brighton University, she went on to study the visual arts diploma at West Dean College where she was able to explore a more experimental side to her printed textile practice.

Viv Goodridge is a retired KS1 teacher who enjoys a wide range of art activities and practices. She has attended many courses at West Dean College, particularly those involving printmaking.  She has provided art support at St Wilfrid’s Hospice for the past ten years.
